· Introduction to the Department of Physics
The Department of Physics at Southern University of Science and Technology has been established since 2011. The Department’s commitment is to develop first-class education and top-notch research in physics. The Department of Physics has been granted authority to award bachelor's degree in Physics and Applied Physics. In addition, the Department has established post-doctoral workstations in 2019.
The Department has a current size of 45 academic staff, including 9 chair Professors, 5 Professors, 24 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors and 2 Teaching Professor. There are 4 Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (including joint employment), 4 Distinguished Young Scholar, and 5 “Pengcheng” scholars. All members of our academic staff have study or work experience at top 100 universities in the world. The Department of Physics now offers 4 majors in condensed matter physics, computational physics, theoretical physics and optics, while setting up astrophysics physics, particle physics, biological and medical physics. The staff members are engaged in frontier researches in the fields of quantum transport and regulation, surface physics, materials physics, computational physics, condensed matter theory, quantum information and quantum computing、atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics.
In recent years, our staff members have published many papers in high profile journals, gaining the Department international impact. Our research support totaled about 7 million (CNY), including 112 projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China, 28 projects from Ministry of Science and Technology and Department of Education, 43 projects from Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, and 107 projects from Shenzhen City. Our academic staff have published about 2000 papers in journals of physics including Nature, Science, Physical Review Letters, etc. Southern University of Science and Technology, carrying historical responsibility of higher education reform in China, is rapidly developing towards the direction of international, high-level, research-oriented university. Keeping pace with the university, the Department of Physics has established a long-term development plan to forge ahead in their endeavor, to enhance its own overall strength both in hardware and software, and to strive to maintain the forward momentum into a world-class physics department at an early date.
