Scientists provide innovative insights and approaches for study of related diseases
Jinsong BIAN | 07/04/2024

From the end of 2023 to present, Professor Jinsong Bian’s team at the Southern University of Science and Technology has successively published five high-quality papers in Circulation, Immunity, Circulation Research, Pharmacological Reviews, and Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B. These papers cover the pathogenesis and treatment strategies of anxiety disorders, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and cardiovascular metabolic diseases, providing new perspectives and ideas for the study of these diseases and attracting widespread attention in the relevant fields.

Exploring the roots of anxiety: New breakthroughs in sodium-potassium pump research

In today’s society, where people are under high pressure for a long time, mental health issues are becoming more prominent. The global burden of disease research data shows that the incidence of anxiety disorders has become the primary issue among mental disorders.

In response to the challenge of anxiety, Professor Bian’s team found that the monoclonal antibody DR5-12D can stabilize the expression of NKAα1 on the cell membrane, prevent the occurrence of neuroinflammation, reduce the excitability of vHIP neurons, and ultimately achieve the therapeutic effect on anxiety-like behavior in mice.

On February 22, 2024, the team published the relevant research paper in the top immunology journal Immunity in the form of an Original Article.

Targeting pulmonary arterial hypertension: Tackling disease research challenges

In addition to the sodium-potassium pump, Professor Bian’s team has also achieved a series of research results in the field of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PH). PH is a fatal disease characterized by increased pulmonary artery pressure, mainly caused by abnormal remodeling of pulmonary vessels. Hypoxia is one of the important factors inducing PH, and an in-depth study of its pathogenesis and search for new therapeutic targets are of great significance for improving the treatment effect of pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Leading hydrogen sulfide research: Aiding the treatment of cardiovascular diseases

Professor Jinsong Bian has long been committed to the research on the physiological and pharmacological effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and is a leader in this field. He believes that H2S and its donors have great potential in managing cardiovascular metabolic diseases (CMD) by regulating a variety of proteins and signaling pathways.

On June 12, 2024, upon the invitation of the editor-in-chief of the international pharmacology authority journal Pharmacological Reviews, Professor Bian’s team published a review paper online, comprehensively and systematically sorting out the physiological role of endogenous H2S in the cardiovascular metabolic system, and summarizing the pharmacological effects of H2S donors in cell, animal, and clinical studies to cope with CMD.

With the continuous deepening of research and the development of technology, H2S is expected to become an innovative and effective treatment method in the treatment of CMD. H2S shows a broad prospect in the treatment of cardiovascular metabolic diseases. By regulating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and protein functions, H2S can significantly improve the pathological state of these diseases. In the future, with the combination of advanced research methods and technologies, the clinical application of H2S is expected to bring new breakthroughs in treating CMD.

Professor Bian, with his profound professional knowledge and keen insight, is committed to tackling difficult medical diseases, continuously exploring new treatment methods and monitoring markers. Academically, he adheres to the philosophy of “leading innovation, broadening horizons, promoting communication, nurturing new talents, and encouraging growth”. Team members continuously explore the field of medicine, actively addressing neurological diseases, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and various cardiovascular diseases, contributing to the progress and development of medical science.

The aforementioned research works were supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Fund, Shenzhen Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, Shenzhen Science and Technology Program, and the Shenzhen Outstanding Youth Fund.
