On March 15, 2022, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) held a meeting on the spirit of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), commonly known as “Two Sessions”.
Fengliang LI, University Council Chairperson, Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech, other members of the University’s leadership team, deans of each college, heads of relevant departments, and representatives of faculty members and students attended the meeting.
In accordance with epidemic prevention and control measures, the meeting was held both online and offline.
Hongwei FANG, Provost of SUSTech, shared the spirit of this year’s Two Sessions and provided an overview of the country’s overall development to the participants.
Xueming YANG, Deputy to the NPC and Acting Vice President at SUSTech, shared his thoughts. He said that he would continue to work hard, face any challenges that may arise, and continue to promote the development of SUSTech as a “Double First-Class” university.
Li JIN, Member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and Acting Vice President, spoke about participating in the Two Sessions and the proposals he made during the meeting. He added that he would continue to fulfill his responsibilities as a member, implement the spirit of the meeting, and ensure the cultivation of top financial talents for the future development of SUSTech.
Also, at the meeting, representatives of faculty members and students shared their understanding and feeling of learning about the spirit of this year’s Two Sessions.
Academician Jiping ZHANG, Member of the Presidential Executive Council and Director of the Shenzhen International Center for Mathematics, said that as an educator, he must use what he has learned through his experiences and serve the regional and national development needs of the country, while also making contributions towards building SUSTech into a world-class university.
Yi GONG, Vice Dean of the College of Engineering, noted that we must keep in mind the mission of educating people for the party and the nation. He said that he would take the initiative to speed up the construction of first-class universities and disciplines, and contribute to the development of the University.
Shihang LUO, an undergraduate student of the Department of Mathematics at Zhixin College, said that as a student of SUSTech, he believes in the practice of mastering one’s skillset, having the courage to be innovative, and instilling the University’s motto of “Virtue, Truth, Advance” in study and work. “The spirit of the University’s motto drives me to make contributions to the country’s rejuvenation.”
President Qikun XUE spoke at the meeting. In his remarks, he said that the year 2022 marks a crucial year for China’s march toward socialist modernization and the second centenary goal. The 20th National Congress of the CPC will be convened in the same year as well. Therefore, the successful conclusion of the Two Sessions is of particular significance.
He highlighted the significance of the Two Sessions meeting and the importance of understanding and adhering to the blueprint set out to meet the country’s major strategic needs in the coming year and implement it where possible in the planning and work at SUSTech.
He added that SUSTech must seize the opportunities provided to it for its selection as a “Double First-Class” university, and build a new type of research university with global influence. It must implement a first-class mindset throughout the University, continue cultivating top talents, and tackle the major issues affecting society today with significant breakthrough results in scientific and technological research.
Chairperson Fengliang LI pointed out that this year’s Two Sessions is a significant meeting as it precedes the 20th National Congress of the CPC that will be held later this year.
He said that the Two Sessions reflects the government’s overall policy and strategic direction for the coming year, and it’s essential for everyone at the University to understand its aims and mission for the education industry and scientific and technological research.
He highlighted its importance in understanding its approach to talent work, scientific and technological strategy, discipline construction, innovation drive and development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), and the overall development of higher education.
He added that the SUSTech would form a unified plan on the guidelines set out in the Two Sessions and implement it accordingly over the coming weeks and months at the University.
