Professor Zhang earned his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geophysics from the Peking University. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) at University of Rhode Island (URI), then worked at GeoTomo LLC as a senior scientist and at University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) as a professor. Since 2017, he joined SUSTech as a professor and the deputy head of ESS. He specializes in computational seismology and subsurface imaging technologies. He developed novel numerical simulation methods to incorporate effects of rough surface topographies on seismic wave propagation. Based on these numerical methods, he further developed seismic hazard assessment method based on strong ground motion simulation, complex near surface velocity model waveform inversion, and earthquake and microseismic monitoring techniques for regions with strong surface topography. He developed the 3D seismic wave propagation modeling software CGFD3D, which has been widely used by other scientists in various studies including strong ground motion, fault rupture process, structure waveform inversion, etc. He has published 100 scientific/technique papers in academic journals (first/corresponding authored papers 46; SCI papers 73; JGR:Solid Earth/GJI/Geophysics papers 39). He received the honors of 2013 National Youth Talent and 2022 National Leading Talent.
