SELF-INTRODUCTION:

Gangjian “GQ” Qin, MD, FAHA, is Chair Professor at Southern University of Science and Technology School of Medicine. Dr. Qin graduated from Tongji Medical University, Wuhan, and received Bachelor of Medicine (1981-1986) and Master of Medical Science (1986-1989). After served in the university affiliated Union Hospital as Pediatrician, Attending Physician and Lecturer for 6 years (1989-1995), he joined the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Italy (1995–1998) and subsequently University of Illinois at Chicago, USA (1998–2001) to complete his postdoctoral research training. Then, Dr. Qin served as Instructor in Medicine and Assistant Professor at St. Elizabeth Medical Center of Bostin, Tufts University (2001–2006); Assistant Professor and Associate Professor (with tenure award) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine (2007–2016); and tenured Professor, Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and Director of Molecular Cardiology at University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine and School of Engineering (2016–2022).

Dr. Qin’s research program is dedicated to defining the molecular mechanisms that underlie cardiovascular biology and contribute to the recovery from cardiovascular disease, and to translating the results from these basic science investigations to clinical applications. His laboratory discovered the roles of the E2F oncogenes in the ischemic angiogenesis and blood pressure regulation; identified a unique population of cardiac stem cells in the rodent heart; characterized the signaling mechanisms of SDF-1/CXCR4 axis in the maintenance of bone marrow stem cell niche; revealed the pivotal role of oxidative metabolism in the differentiation of endothelial progenitor cells; uncovered novel mechanisms of systemic response to ischemic cardiac injury through circulating extracellular vesicles; and recently, discovered the role of Sam68 in the regulation of glucose, lipid, and energy metabolism and in the pathogenesis of obesity and type-2 diabetes. Dr. Qin has published over 130 original research articles in major international journals, including Circulation, Circ Res, J Clin Invest, J Exp Med, PNAS, and Nat Comm. His research had been supported by the National Institute of Health (NIH), American Heart Association (AHA), and American Diabetes Association (ADA). In addition, Dr. Qin served on the editorial boards of multiple journals in stem cell biology and cardiovascular sciences including Circulation Research and on the review committees of national and international funding organizations including NIH, VA, and AHA. Dr. Qin also serves on the AHA Council on Basic Cardiovascular Science (BCVS) and Council on Cardiovascular Radiology and Intervention (CVRI). In the last 18 years, Dr. Qin has trained over 50 biomedical researchers and educators.
