School of Design Profile 2022

The first cohort of undergraduate students in the new School of Design at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen completed eight intense studio courses during this academic year. The works created by the students showcase the breadth of future-directed design at the School of Design as well as the unique vigorous learning and teaching style of four-week studios emphasizing design process, design values, and collaboration.

Specializing in either an object or an experience focus, the students created, prototyped, and delivered cutting-edge user interfaces, sustainable material economies, baby bottles, bicycle handlebar grips, visual communications, filmic essays, and media art pieces. Through their works, students express their understanding of a fast-changing world in which design opportunities often arise in unexpected everyday settings, around ubiquitous consumer technologies, and in response to the design industrial context of Shenzhen. The School of Design Profile 2022 presents examples of fresh and exciting student works that each contributes in their own way to rendering this planet a better place.

Maka Baka

Team members: Deng Zhenxin, Sheng Yue

Maka and Baka chairs, originating from the imagination of children, are cut and assembled from recyclable and environmentally friendly cardboard, so the versatility of children's chairs is realized from an ergonomic point of view. Children can either sit or lie on a Maka chair, which fulfills their wish to "lie in a rocking chair and watch the moon", while use the Maka chair as a cave. Assembled from the leftovers of the Maka chair, the Baka chair unexpectedly gives children a happy experience of a slide. "There is no garbage in this world, only misplaced resources."

Wind of Silence

Team members: Sheng Yue, Xue Renchao, Qiu Guo

When you come to a public study area, have you ever encountered a situation where the person across from you is shaking his or her legs, playing music, completely immersed in his own world? When you gently remind him, but he doesn't notice it at all? Finally, you have to speak directly to them. This has an impact on the learning efficiency of both sides. In response to this scenario, our group designed an interactive device to be placed in a public study area. The device can be cleverly integrated into the environment, using gentle airflow and lighting to remind people if they make a disturbance. The goal of our design is to help maintain the harmony of public study areas.

Beyond Numbness

Team members: Zhang Yijing, Li Xuan

In an age of media with too much information, we are paying attention to people's numbness to information. In this 7-minute audiovisual work, we make extensive use of previously existing sounds to achieve the purpose of "(re)cycling". Almost all of these sounds come from nature and daily life. By reorganizing these sounds, we hope that people will start to think about the meaning of these little things in our daily life again, get out of the "blind spots", and listen to these familiar sounds with fresh ears
